through manufacturers/supplier training or in- house demonstration and mentoring.

  • Operator must be medically fit and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Where operator is unfit they must notify their manager.

  • Drug and Alcohol testing to follow a significant or potentially significant incident.

  • Drug and alcohol testing is available where managers suspect that an employee is unfit through drug or alcohol use.

  • Protective devices must be used when fitted to the plant/machinery i.e. safety gates, seat belts, guards, beacons, reversing alarms.

  • Do not carry unauthorised passengers – If there is no designated seat for a passenger then no passengers will be authorised to ride.

  • Do not use personal devices such as headphones, satellite navigation devices, mobile phones etc.

  • Plant/Machinery to be driven with care to avoid pedestrians.

  • Where applicable the key must be removed and the handbrake applied when not in use.

  • Vehicle to be operated only by authorised persons for authorised tasks.

  • When not in use vehicle is parked in safe place with tips of forks touching the ground.

  • High Visibility vests should be worn when access and egressing plant/machinery where the site rules have identified this as a requirement.

  • Operators must be at least 18 years old.

  • A pre-use check should be undertaken before use. The pre-use check should be based on the information provided by the manufacturer.

  • Defects should be reported immediately and the vehicle removed from use until such time as deemed fit for use by a competent person.

  • Servicing and planned preventative maintenance will be carried out in line with operational manual (periodically/mileage accrued).

  • Only use machinery in the environment it is designed to be used for.

  • Only use the equipment for its intended use.

  • Do not override any safety devices

  • The operational manual must be available.

Failure of Lifting Equipment

  • Thorough examination will be carried out at the following frequencies; 6 months, for lifting equipment and any associated accessories used to lift people, 6 months, for all lifting accessories and 12 months for all other lifting equipment.

  • Thorough examination will be carried out

    following exceptional circumstances’, e.g. if it is damaged or fails, is out of use for long periods, or if there is a major change in how it is used which is likely to affect its integrity.

  • Safe Working Load shall be displayed on the equipment.

  • Safe Working Load must never be exceeded

  • Never use unsuitable equipment, e.g. makeshift, damaged, badly worn chains, shortened with knots, kinked or twisted wire ropes, frayed or rotted fibre ropes.

  • Lighting should be suitable for the type of environment and the work to be undertaken.

  • Site Information should be provided to staff and visitors ensuring that they are aware of the hazards on site and the need to stick to designated walkways.

  • Speed Limits must be followed on site at all times

  • Surfaces regularly inspected to ensure suitability for plant and machinery.

  • Plant/Machinery must not be used near unprotected water edges.

  • No smoking strictly adhered to whilst refuelling/recharging.

  • Operators should stick to designated routes.
