Personal Protective Equipment

  • Toxic and/or flammable atmospheres

  • Lack of oxygen

  • Oxygen enriched atmosphere

  • Flooding

  • Exposure to hazardous substances/ organisms

  • Mechanical operation

  • Fire/Explosion

  • Asphyxiation

  • Fire/explosion

  • Drowning

  • Infection/asphyxiation/ chemical burns

  • Trapping

  • Heat exhaustion

 

PPE requirements will be dependant on the risk assessment of the type of confined space.

Do

  • Check with your Line Manager that confined space working has been addressed in the site specific risk assessment.

  • Be aware that the following areas may be considered confined spaces:

    • Closed tanks

    • Vats, silos and pits

    • Deep narrow trenches

    • Unventilated rooms

    • Culverts

    • Bridge

    • Inspection chambers/box sections

    • Vehicle body compartments

  • Ensure the atmosphere is tested using a calibrated monitor prior to entering any confined space.

  • Follow all precautions in the confined space risk assessment.

  • Wear a fully calibrated individual gas monitor when in any confined space.

REMEMBER - IF IN DOUBT, STAY OUT!!

Do Not

Consider work in a confined space unless it is absolutely necessary

Enter any confined space unless a risk assessment has been carried out.

Enter a confined space until you have received the appropriate training.

Carry out entry using breathing apparatus unless a permit to work system is inoperation.

Specific Training Requirements:

  • Confined space entry training where appropriate.

  • Atmosphere monitoring training where appropriate

  • Use of breathing apparatus where appropriate.
