Do

  • Only drive a forklift if you are a minimum of 18 years old.

  • Locate and ensure you are familiar with all machine operations and controls.

  • Check brakes, lights and horn before use.

  • Ensure reversing sounder and warning lights are operational.

  • Ensure seat belt/safety restraint is in good condition.

  • Know the capacity of the forklift before using it.

  • A pre- use check should be undertaken before use. The pre- use check should be based on the information provided by the manufacturer.

  • Watch out for pedestrians.

  • Be careful of ceiling clearance or overhead obstructions when raising the mast.

  • Always remember that the safe working load of a forklift reduces as the mast is tilted forward.

  • Always put the heavy end of the load against the load backrest.

  • When approaching a blind corner, use horn and drive slowly.

  • Always have someone guide you if a load restricts your vision.

  • Slow down when changing direction or on wet or greasy surfaces.

  • Avoid harsh braking, especially when carrying a load.

  • For battery-operated vehicles, charge in well-ventilated area.

  • Park on even ground and lower the forks tips to the ground when the vehicle is not in use.

  • Turn off the ignition and remove the keys when the vehicle is unattended.

  • Always store the key in a secure place.

  • Always keep a safe distance from any excavation (at least the same distances away as the depth of the excavation)

  • Report all incidents and near misses

 

Do Not

Do not use this equipment unless you have been instructed / Trained and hold the correct licence in its safe use and operation and have been given permission

Do not use faulty equipment. Report any faults immediately.

Do not use engine-powered forklifts in poorly ventilated areas.

Do not allow anyone to ride on the forks

Do not lift a load with the mast tilted forward.

Do not travel with forks raised or reach mechanism extended.

Do not use a forklift without a load rating plate.

Never travel with the load elevated.

Do not attempt to turn direction on an incline or sloping surface.

Do not dismount from a forklift while the engine is running unless the vehicle has completely stopped, transmission is in park position, and the parking brake is effectively engaged.

Do not refuel an engine-powered forklift unless the motor is stopped and ignition turned off.

.Do not smoke while refuelling the vehicle

Do not operate if not medically fit or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Where operator is unfit they must notify their manager before use.

Do not carry unauthorised passengers – If there is no designated seat for a passenger then no passengers will be authorised to ride.

Do not use personal devices such as headphones, satellite navigation devices, mobile phones etc.

Specific Training Requirements:

  • Basic Training - through an accredited training provider training to the standards outlined in the L117 ACOP.

  • Specific job training - tailored to the needs of the organisation.

  • Familiarisation training - Familiarisation training is the third stage of training, which should be carried out on the job, under close supervision, by someone with appropriate

knowledge.
