Do

  • Operate machine with valid certification.

  • Operate plant in accordance with the manufacturer’s handbook.

  • Note the effect of varying distances to the centre of gravity.

  • The machine operator must be in charge of the working area of the machine.

  • Carry out a full daily check sheet and report all defects to Cargo Team Leader.

  • Full PPE.

  • Always sit in the seat when starting the engine/machine.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.

  • Doors to be closed whilst operating machine.

  • Keep hands away from areas where there is risk of crushing e.g. covers, door, window.

  • Check the attachment is properly attached and locked.

  • Be familiar with the loading circle radius of at least 7 metres (23 ft).

  • Load evenly into tipper trucks.

  • Tell road transport drivers to stay in their vehicle cab until machine has completed operation.

  • Always face direction of travel and complete a 360° check before moving the vehicle.

  • When using the large shovel please follow the New HSE guidance that states” There should be rigorous segregation between pedestrians and vehicles.”

Do Not

Operate machine without sufficient certification.

Carry passengers.

Walk underneath raised attachment (bucket).

Operate machine whilst persons are in the danger area.

Use mobile phone whilst in operation.

Do not work in confined areas.

Do not work near to the edge of the quay or ramps.

Leave machine running unattended.

Do operate machine when personnel (wagon drivers) are standing in the danger area.

Exceed the rated load capacity.

Specific Training Requirements:

  • Basic Training - through an accredited training provider training to the standards outlined in the L117 ACOP.

  • Specific job training - tailored to the needs of the organisation.

  • Familiarisation training - Familiarisation training is the third stage of training, which should be carried out on the job, under close supervision, by

someone with appropriate knowledge.
