Do

  • Only trained and monitored personal to handle steel coils.

  • Stop all operations if you see any dangerous occurrence and report to a team leader.

  • Check the physical condition of the cargo prior to loading. If there is any doubt then bring it to the attention of a Cargo Team Leader.

  • Ensure that the roller shutter doors to/from the sheds are either fully open or fully closed.

  • Ensure that mast is vertical when lifting stacked loads.

  • Use protective sleeves on forks/attachments

  • If vision is impaired by load then travel in reverse.

  • Sound horn when entering or leaving buildings / storage areas.

  • Allow a minimum of 1 metre space between each row of coils.

  • Chock both sides of the coil once coil has landed/settled.

  • Use the correct lifting strop, check weights of coil prior to lifting.

  • Use a lifting strop with an extra protective sleeve.

  • Ensure the lifting strop is in good condition, if unsure contact a team leader.

  • Ensure a good lighting source in the warehouse.

  • Good housekeeping in and around storage area.

  • Ensure that heavy coils are stowed bottom first and the lighter coils on top.

  • Stow coils in the correct manner (see page 2)

  • Work in pairs when loading of steel coils

  • Wear full PPE at all times

  • Report any loose banding/packaging to team leader.

  • Stand well clear of any live load.

Do Not

Attempt to load the trailer without the driver being in attendance and overseeing the operation.

Attempt to load the rear half of the trailer until the driver has moved the curtain to the front end of the trailer.

Attempt to load trailer until you have a visual of the driver.

Stand in the between coils when forklift truck is stowing them away.

Stow coils on top of any obstructions.

Climb on top of stowed coils.

Attempt to store coils more than 2 tiers high.

Put yourself in dangerous position at any time during the handling of coils.

Attempt to allow yourself to be carried on any coil during the moving of the cargo via a forklift truck.

Leave timber/chocks in and around the storage/route area.

Attempt to load coils on to transport near the quayside

Mis-use any lifting strops.

Walk down each isle of coils where there are loose banding/packing visible.

Turn your back to a live load.

Specific Training Requirements:

  • Basic Training - through an accredited training provider training to the standards outlined in the L117 ACOP.

  • Specific job training - tailored to the needs of the organisation.

  • Familiarisation training - Familiarisation training is the third stage of training, which should be carried out on

the job, under close supervision, by someone with appropriate knowledge.

Please stow coils as shown in the image above, by doing this it will reduce the push/pull force on the lower coils reducing the chance of the coils moving under their own weight.
