Do

  • Only trained and monitored personal to handle steel plate.

  • Stop all operations if you see any dangerous occurrence and report to a Team Leader.

  • Check the physical condition of the cargo prior to loading. If there is any doubt, then bring it to the attention of a Cargo Team Leader.

  • Ensure that mast is vertical when lifting stacked loads.

  • If vision is impaired by load then travel in reverse.

  • Good housekeeping in and around storage areas.

  • Stow plate in the correct manner by size to avoid bending and damaging the plates.

  • Work in pairs when loading of steel plate.

  • Always wear full PPE.

  • Report any damage of steel plate to a Cargo Team Leader as it occurs.

  • Stand well clear of any live load.

  • Use steel chock to split plate.

  • Lift within the safe working parameters of the IFLT being used.

  • Be wary of mast sections resting on the trailer bed when lowering cargo.

Do Not

Attempt to load the trailer without the driver being in attendance and overseeing the operation.

Attempt to load trailer until you have a visual of the driver.

Stow plates on top of any obstructions.

Put yourself in dangerous position at any time during the handling of steel plate.

Attempt to allow yourself to be carried on any plate during the moving of the cargo via a forklift truck.

Leave timber/chocks in and around the storage/route area.

Turn your back to a live load.

Attempt to lift steel plate during the hours of darkness.

Use forks tip to split the plate where avoidable.

Lower the load onto trailer unless driver is in full view and stood in a safe position.

Specific Training Requirements:

  • Basic Training - through an accredited training provider training to the standards outlined in the L117 ACOP.

  • Specific job training - tailored to the needs of the organisation.

  • Familiarisation training - Familiarisation training is the third stage of training, which should be carried out on the job, under close supervision, by someone with appropriate knowledge.
